Huzzah!  I'm off to see Shonen Knife tonight! :) And now for a little geeking out...  But fear not, I've interjected music so this journal isn't a complete nerdy mess of things.

Some people don't seem to get why I like them.  I offer no defense.  One shouldn't have to justify this sort of thing anyhoo.  But I will be happy to tell you what I love.  I think some people expect them to be somehow ironic for singing about food and cute animals and when they realize there is no irony intended suddenly the band is just ridiculous to them.  Why don't they write about major world issues, social concerns, or at least relationship issues?  Personally I find the lack of these subjects in their songs fascinating.  They are celebrating the simplest things that make them happy.  I love that!

There's courage behind this band, I believe.  Sure it takes guts to sing about controversial stuff like overpopulation, Climate Change, or the current administration (Obama's still president, right?  I haven't bothered to check lately), but I challenge anyone to blast this out their car windows...

Seriously, do it and you'll receive 1 million Mister Wolfe points of awesomeness.  Redeemable for one Hires Big H hamburger.  Mister Wolfe must be present to receive said hamburger.

They do from time to time discuss heavier subjects like taking chances, avoiding bad situations, and what the world would look like if you suddenly had fish eyes.  I'm glad I'm not the only who's worried about this!  And as far as women's empowerment?  Well there's this song...

Okay maybe I don't get the whole empowerment thing but I still think that would be a good anthem for it.

At the heart of my love for Shonen Knife is this... I can be having the rottenest day imaginable and all the problems of the world are walling me in.  My cranky ways seem chronic and I'm ranting in a dA journal about becoming a hermit up in the Wasatch mountains.  You know it's bad then.  For some inexplicable reason if I put this song on...

...I'm cheered right up.  It's not just because it's a classic Carpenters cover, that's just icing on the cake!  Any song of Shonen Knife seems to make me happy.  I don't think it's possible for me to be sad listening to them.  If you get the chance I suggest looking more into them.  They're wonderful and deserve much love.

My kid and I heard the song "I Like Shopping" or some such thing by them on the radio the other day.  I thought it was a pretty terrible song, actually, but it made both of us laugh, and there is worth in that.  I've had a soft spot in my heart for them ever since the PowerPuff girls, and their version of "Top of the World" is one of the reasons I own "If I Were a Carpenter," the other reason is that my wife is a HUGE Carpenters fan (which is a little bit sad).  Sonic Youth's take on "Superstar" is probably my favorite bit, though.  Nothing begs to be asked the question, "What the hell is this?" like that song.
